Community Service

Volunteers aren't paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless.

Community service is the donated service or activity that is performed by someone or a group of people for the benefit of the public or its institutions.  Performing community service is a way for students to give back to the school and the community around them.  Through community service students can learn more about and better appreciate the community they live in.  Community service also allows others to live a portion of their life through the experience of others.  This can broaden their understanding and appreciation for diversity.  Giving back to the community also helps to develop better social responsibility to the school and the surrounding area. Community service has show to increase kindness, self esteem and increased effort to do their best.

The Tuckahoe Common School District shared decision making team developed the districts community service program in 2009.  Through this program students in 7th and 8th grade will be giving 20 hours of service to their community for each year.  Students can find community service opportunities through the school or outside.

Some examples of Community Service are:
After school help with a teacher.
            Volunteer hours at the library.
Support a special events through SYS.
            Serving on the Student Counsel.
            Helping at an animal shelter.
Helping at a food pantry or meal program.
            ... and many more

Through out the year many opportunities will be available through the school and programs that the school partners with.  Please keep your eye on the link to the left for upcoming events.

Once your child has completed some community service hours please take a moment and complete the Hours Log form to document their time with the school.
